Description

Lung Health Study II

Participants: 1,116

Randomization:
Nov. 1994-Nov. 1995

Follow-up:
through Apr. 1999

The Lung Health Study II is an ongoing randomized clinical trial with 1116 participants recruited from the participant population of Lung Health Study I who were either currently smoking or had smoked within the previous two years.

Participants were randomly assigned to either an inhaled corticosteroid (triamcinolone acetonide) or a similarly packaged inhaled placebo.

The objective of this study is to determine whether the use of inhaled corticosteroids, in persons at high risk for developing COPD, reduces

  1. The rate of decline in FEV1
  2. Respiratory morbidity and mortality

Randomization occurred from November 1994 to November 1995. Follow-up continued through April 1999.

Lung Health Study II is supported by grant NIH/5U01-HL50267-03.

The Lung Health Studies I, II and III are multi-center clinical trials sponsored by the Division of Lung Diseases of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
