Abstract:

We will establish the relationships between several familiar statistical concepts that, at first, only seem vaguely related: the two-sample t-statistic, the Hotelling's T22 statistic, the odds ratio, and the logistic regression. This will lead to a simple representation of the most general two-sample problem involving k continuous variables; the result, the generalized distance as used in discriminant analysis, will also be shown to be proportional to the log of the odds ratio representing the difference of the two samples. We will also point out a few applications of these newly found relationships, especially in the analysis and reporting of case-control studies.

A social tea will be held at 3:00 P.M. in A434 Mayo. All are Welcome.
