Data are from Atkinson and Polivy (1976). ``Effects of delay, attack, and retaliation on state depression and hostility,'' Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 85:570-576. 40 men were enrolled in a study on reactions to unprovoked verbal abuse. 10 men each were randomized to receive one of four types of verbal abuse: -- insult given to them with retaliation allowed -- insult given to them without retaliation allowed -- apology with retaliation, and -- apology without retaliation. The outcome is a measure of the men's hostility towards the situation. Data are coded as 1 = yes and 2 = no.
