On Long Island in New York State, approximately 3/4 of all public school expenses are paid by local taxpayers. The remaining 1/4 is paid by the state government. In the early 1990s, there were large budget cuts by the state, resulting in a nearly 20\% decline in state aid to the schools. Researchers wish to examine the pattern of aid allocation across districts. The data are: percent change in state aid from the 1984-1985 school year to the 1994-1995 school year, average ninth grade class size, and percent of students which are white, for each district in Nassau County. These data come from: Chatterjee, Handcock, and Simonoff (1995). A Casebook for a First Course in Statistics and Data Analysis. New York: Wiley. The authors originally obtained the data from a Newsday article on September 4 1994, which reported figures from the New York Department of Education.
