School of Public Health

Division of Biostatistics

PubH 7400 (Spring 2012)

Course Description:

Participating either as a consumer, adviser, or contributor to evidence based public health decisions requires an understanding of the quality of that evidence. The course is targeted to clinicians, graduate students, and professional scientists on the forefront of evidence based medicine. A strong foundation in clinical trials helps prepare scientists to evaluate research advances in human health and to implement well-designed pioneering health research. This class will be motivated by published trials and organized into specific learning objectives called lessons. Each lesson is delivered on-line and will have an audio lecture presentation, readings, interactive discussion boards, video of experts on that topic of clinical research, and other optional enrichment materials. The instruction team will coordinate the interplay of learning materials in such a way that students can easily interact with each other and with teaching faculty. The goal is to enable you to apply the knowledge to your field of study and ask lots of questions! The topics of the class follow the natural sequence of a protocol. For this reason, we will use this as a framework for the course and for a group project to connect the concepts together into one protocol document that you develop with your group. Finally, there will be three exams (two midterms and a final) and weekly homework, all delivered on-line. This class is an alternative to PubH 7420, Clinical Trials, rather than a prequel or sequel.

Instructors: Susan Telke and Lynn Eberly
