Computing For This Course

  • Use of SAS Version 9.0 or higher is required. You may use SAS on the Biostatistics system, or elsewhere if you have access to it. If you are not a Biostatistics student, see the instructor to get a Biostatistics account. The Biostatistics computers run under the UNIX operating system. You can get a student license for PC SAS through the University fairly cheaply (~ $100 per year); go to the ADCS web site.
  • Use of some package capable of making graphs of data is required. You may use whatever package you prefer. Our preference is R or S-Plus, and we will make the R code for all plots we see in class available on the R Plotting Code web site. Here is a brief tutorial on graphing in R.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the UNIX operating system and you will be using SAS, R, or S-Plus via the Biostatistics UNIX network, here is a very brief introduction to logging on to the network, creating files, and running programs.
